Year in Review May - July, 2008

July

July, 2008 was a super busy month!

Rachel went to girl scout camp - overnight for a week! We missed her, but she had a blast.

Alex went to Cougar Quest camp the same week that Rachel was gone.

Our friends from California came to spend a week with us. We went horseback riding, hiking and kayaking - even though the weather was bad and rainy!

No sooner did our friends leave then we started packing for our amazing August trip to Peru!

June


The highlight of June was a visit from Cousin Peter. He and the kids had fun playing Rock Band.

Rachel and Dad went to the Daddy-Daughter dance, and had a good time.

The kids had their very last Meydenbauer Piano recital in June. Alex started with a new teacher at Chopin Academy in September and Rachel also found a new teacher - Alex!

Rachel played "Jazzy Moves" and "The Pink Panther".

Alex played "Maple Leaf Rag" by Scott Joplin and "Rondo Alla Turca" by Mozart.

May

The highlight of May was Grandma coming to see us. Alex and I took her to see David Lanz in the Seattle Ten Grands concert.

She had fun practicing archery in our backyard.

Good thing she didn't try to shoot this guy at Northwest Trek, though!

May ended with an SVGC concert. It was very nice.

Year in Review January - April, 2008

April



April was all about the opera. Rachel performed with the Snoqualmie Valley Girl's Choir in the Bellevue Opera production of Carmen. It was amazing. The girls dressed up as little street urchins and sang their hearts out in French! Rehearsals took place during the whole month of April, several nights per week. Since a few of us moms were driving to every rehearsal, the stage manager asked us to be extras (see me in the lefthand corner, there?)

















March



March was a busy month. We had fun baking a lamb cake for Easter.

The best part of March was going to Lake Tahoe to ski with our friends who now live in Scotts Valley, CA.

It was everyone's first time skiing in Tahoe and we all had a great time. The kids were all in ski lessons - well Alex did snowboarding - and the adults had fun skiing except me. I had fun relaxing and reading and cooking in peace and quiet!

We had a chance to see Carson City - the Capital of Nevada - and even dragged along our friends' kids.

We also were able to visit Sacramento - California's capital. Alex liked it so much, he said he planned to raise his family there.

February is Birthday month!


This year the kids had sleepover birthdays at home. Same weekend - RMD on Friday night, APD on Saturday night. It was exhausting but fun.








Legaless in Memoriam

Rachel's favorite stick bug died in February. It was the first of her colony to pass away and she was really sad. She held a funeral and buried him in her garden.

Shopping in Chicago. Or is it Seattle? Who Can Tell???

While shopping for Christmas in sweet home Chicagoland this year, I really started to think about how homogenous our country has become. And how it's not really such a great thing. If I had not experienced the 4 hour flight between Seattle and Chicago, and instead just somehow ended up back here without knowing it, walking in to one of the many Chicagoland malls would offer no clues as to where I was. The stores are all the same! Target in every town around here, Barnes and Noble, Starbucks... the stores are all the same! Even one of my favorite restaurants when we lived here - Maggiano's - has migrated to Seattle. One of the stores I like to visit in Seattle is Guitar Center. I thought that was a one of a kind store. No such thing - they have one here! Last month we went and ate at Bucca de Beppo in Seattle (after going to Guitar Center). It was an okay place - as far as Seattle Italian food goes (usually not the best) - but what do you know? There's one of those here too! I was able to get some winter boots at Carson's which is a Chicagoland chain - at least so far it hasn't been purchased or franchised afar. And it really started me thinking - would someone be able to avoid all Corporate-owned national chain stores for some set amount of time? Could that someone be me, for a year??? I told the kids I might try it and they freaked! Who was going to take them to use their Christmas giftcards????!!!!

So, now I need to set my rules. It's my thing after all, so I can do it however I want. I really want to try and avoid corporate stores that have nationalized. Independent franchises don't bother me as much, although they are still not as good as personally owned businesses. I hate Target anyway, so avoiding that place is okay. Ditto for Costco. Michael's and JoAnn's will be tough, but I'll be able to discover boutique yarn shops and also bead shops for Rachel. Bookstores will be challenging. I love Barnes and Noble and Borders, but don't like what they have done to independent booksellers (think "You've Got Mail" here). I really, really love Amazon. Pat's brother helped me rationalize this one by allowing for the fact that they have no brick and mortar stores and have not helped create so much homogeninity (is that even a word?) So, I'm still not sure though... Amazon has definitely damaged many small mom and pop shops but since I'm addicted to books, I might have to make an exception here. Food chains won't be a problem. After reading Fast Food Nation, I generally avoid those places anyway. I might miss Chipotle, but that's it. I really need to get back on my gluten-free health plan, so eating out should probably be avoided. Clothing.... Well, I don't buy a lot of clothes. But, they are usually from Target, Eddie Bauer, Ann Taylor Loft, Nordstrom, JC Penney's - all chains. I thought REI might be safe - but what do you know - they opened one in Oakbrook! Now they have to be out too! So, clothing will take a little more thought. It all sounds kind of challenging and fun though, doesn't it?

A Season Ended

Remember my shopping trials and tribulations? Well, it ended up great. We did not end up getting the kids anything big like a Wii or a Zune, but they still received plenty of small gifts. And, they both actually had a lot of fun giving gifts this year. Rachel especially really seemed to enjoy shopping for everyone else. She put a great deal of thought into her presents for the rest of us. One of my favorite gifts was from her - 2 puzzles. My other favorite gift was my typewriter key bracelet from my mom. Rachel's favorite was a locket that belonged to my Grandma. Alex's were his binoculars, his pocket watch from Grandpa, his video games, and his piano light box from Grandma (almost everything he received actually!) Poor Pat - did not get a lot of gifts. He of course gets to share the new family printer, but if he wants anything big he'll have to get it himself. Somehow we still have lots of things to ship back, though. Well, another Christmas over, and a new year beginning. I can't wait until I have time to post about my latest great anti-consumerism idea for 2009!

December Dearth

It's looking to me like there is a dearth of blogging that takes place in December. The friends' that I visit are surely down on posts. So are RMD and APD. Mine only has 2 posts so far this month. What's going on with that? It's not a lack of activity or busy-ness, that's for sure. A lack of creativity? Maybe. Fatigue? Maybe. Laziness? Maybe.

I hope it ends soon!

Affluenza - revisited

In reading my old posts, I decided to revisit one of my favorite topics - Affluenza. It helps me to read others opinions every once in awhile to refocus and regroup. I found this blog- Frugal Zeitgeist. Pretty interesting. I'm glad I found it. So far, I have not purchased a single gift for the kids and it's a week and 2 days until Christmas. I don't even really have any ideas. I sort of started to freak out this morning - I was tempted to click "yes" on the Amazon site for a Zune for APD and call RMD's science teacher and put in an order for a bunny. Never mind that they are committed to saving for these things themselves - and I am sure will enjoy them more that way. So, I'm still stuck - what to buy???? Well, I still have a week...

Figgy Pudding, anyone?

Tonight, Rachel's choir will be caroling in Seattle as part of the Figgy Pudding celebration. (yes, this choir is busy!)
